Picking up hobbies – Punch needle art

Hello again! It’s been a couple months since my first post and so far I’ve done horribly in keeping this up to date. I have a bunch of post ideas though so I’m making it a goal to start writing more!

Now on to the topic of hobbies. Ever since I was little, I’ve picked up and subsequently dropped a bunch of different hobbies. Hobbies like carving stamps, origami, drawing, illustrating, clay sculpting, candle-making…the list goes on. The two newest ones I’ve added this summer due to COVID-19 and the countless hours I’ve needed to fill have been sewing clothes and punch needling. This post is about my just finished punch needle project.

I first came across punch needle art while scrolling through Instagram one day, and went down the path of exploring fiber art and all its various forms. Punch needle stuck out to me because it seemed very therapeutic, and the ability to stop and start whenever you want without needing to count stitches sounded great to me!

Okay, now a little background on what punch needle actually is. In essence, it’s a form of embroidery where you take a punch needle, thread it with yarn, and punch holes into a woven fabric that keeps the stitches in place. Super simple!

l ordered a punch needle kit and enjoyed making the mini flowers so much I decided my next craft project would be a punch needle rug! After many sketches including geometric, abstract, and nature patterns, I decided on a simple geometric line rug pattern and chose some muted colors so it would match the room. All in all, it took around 50 hours to punch the rug, and another 10 to whip stitch the edges. Dimensions of the rug ended up being 15″ x 25″.

Here are some photos I took of the process!
